Cleaning

For routine cleaning, gently buff the jewellery with a soft microfibre cloth to remove fingerprints, oils, and everyday residue.


For a deeper clean when necessary:

  1. Fill a bowl with warm water and a small amount of mild soap.
  2. Gently swish the jewellery in the solution for 30–60 seconds.
  3. If required, lightly wipe with a soft microfibre cloth.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with clean water.
  5. Dry completely with a soft towel.


Avoid abrasive cleaners, harsh chemicals, bleach, saltwater soaks, or abrasive brushes, as these may damage decorative elements or affect the finish of certain components.

Please note that I cannot guarantee how gemstones, pearls, crystals, or other non-metal materials will react to soap and water. If your piece contains these elements, clean with additional care.


Materials Used

My chainmail jewellery is primarily made from stainless steel jump rings, with stainless steel clasps, findings, charms, and ear wires. Some pieces may also incorporate gemstones, pearls, or other decorative elements.

Some pieces may be made from Aluminium, where specified. Please read below for the Aluminium care section.


Durability and Finish

Stainless steel is highly durable, tarnish-resistant, waterproof, and designed to withstand everyday wear. With proper care, stainless steel jewellery can maintain its appearance for many years and often lasts a lifetime.

While the metal components are exceptionally resilient, pieces containing gemstones, pearls, crystals, or other adornments should still be handled with care to protect these more delicate materials.


Handling and Construction

Chainmail jewellery is constructed from individual interlinked jump rings. Although stainless steel is a strong and durable metal, the rings are not soldered closed. Excessive force, snagging, crushing, or rough handling may cause damage to the weave or individual components.

For best results, avoid pulling, twisting, or subjecting your jewellery to unnecessary stress.


Skin Sensitivity and Allergies

Stainless steel is generally considered hypoallergenic and suitable for most people with sensitive skin. However, individuals with known metal allergies, particularly nickel allergies, should wear jewellery with discretion.

While all components are sourced as stainless steel, findings and charms are manufactured by third-party suppliers, and I cannot guarantee they are completely free from trace alloying elements such as nickel.


Everyday Wear

Stainless steel jewellery is highly resistant to water, tarnishing, and everyday exposure. However, to help preserve the appearance of both the metal and any decorative elements, I recommend avoiding prolonged exposure to perfumes, harsh chemicals, cleaning products, and chlorinated or salt water where possible.

For pieces containing gemstones, pearls, crystals, or other delicate materials, remove jewellery before showering, swimming, exercising, or performing household cleaning tasks.

With proper care, stainless steel chainmail jewellery can last a lifetime.


Storage

Store jewellery in a soft fabric or velour pouch when not in use. Keeping pieces in a clean, dry place will help minimise surface wear and prevent unnecessary scratching from contact with other jewellery.


Aluminium Jewellery

I do not often use Aluminium in my work anymore, but may for old, or large projects. Most pieces are made of stainless steel unless otherwise specified as Aluminium.

Aluminium chainmail jewellery does not tarnish but may gradually lose some of its shine over time. Aluminium is a softer metal than stainless steel, so pieces should be treated more gently and protected from excessive force. Aluminium jewellery cannot handle the same force as stainless steel, so please completely avoid tugging on the jewellery to avoid chainmail rings becoming undone. 

To maintain the finish, avoid exposure to perfumes, chemicals, cleaning products, salt water, and chlorinated water. Remove aluminium jewellery before showering, swimming, or washing dishes.

Clean gently using a soft microfibre cloth. For deeper cleaning, use warm water with a small amount of mild soap, rinse thoroughly, and dry completely. Avoid abrasive cloths, brushes, and harsh cleaning products.
